Veterinary Surgery and Radiology
The department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology is one of the oldest departments of Bombay Veterinary College. The department is having most of the instruments and equipments for U.G., P.G. and Ph D teaching and research. The department is spread with sufficient space. One of the oldest Animal Hospital of BSPCA is attached with this department and since the staff of this department is providing honorary services to the hospital the hospital is allowing the U.G., P.G. and Ph D students to work and use materials for learning in this way the U.G., P.G. and Ph D students of this college is getting sufficient Clinical cases of Surgery for hands on training
In 1996, Dr. L. B. Sarkate became the Professor and Head and he attempted to develop the department under his dynamic leadership. In 2002, he organized 26th Annual Congress and Symposium of Veterinary Surgery for the first time in a different way. During the same period, the department developed total intravenous General anaesthetic technique using Propofol in equine, canine, feline and bovine. Under his leadership the department established Endoscopy and Laparoscopy unit. Under his guidance maximum number of recommendation were approved from this department in Animal Science Research Council, of MAFSU, Nagpur and were benefited to the farmers and field veterinarians.
The department of Surgery identified the need of companion animal surgery and now in the year 2010-11, a first batch of diploma in companion animal surgery will be started for the first time in the country. Total 120 students are awarded M.V.Sc. degree and three got PhD degree from this department.
The departmental staff is providing services to the renowned Animal Hospital affiliated to College and performing various Major and minor operations on all the species of animals on all the days of year.
The history of the Department of Surgery could be traced back right to the inception of the Bombay Veterinary College in 1886. At this time main duty of the veterinarian was treatment of the animals and their own importance in veterinary profession. In early period subject of Surgery and Anatomy went together forming one department with Professor of Surgery as head .This continued for pretty long time until 1957 when a separate chair for the Professor of Anatomy was created. Dr. Mohiuddin, Dr. S.R Chaddha, Dr. K.R. Alur, Dr. S.R. Hattangady are famous names of surgeons, who honoured the chair in their own periods. Dr. S.R. Hattangadi a famous canines and equine surgeon headed the department after its separation from Anatomy. Similarly Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Infertility which was part and parcel of the Surgery department were also separated to form a new independent department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The Department of Surgery headed by Prof. S.R. Hattangadi was recognized for the post-graduate course of two years duration leading to M. V. Sc. degree by the University of Bombay in 1961.
Dr. K.S. Deshpande, M. V. Sc, Ph. D, F.R.V.A.C. took over the charge of the professor of Surgery in 1972. He took a lot of pain during his tenure and taught the art and science of surgery to many students by way of his excellent lucid teaching. His students worked in other parts of the country and made awareness about the importance of successful surgery under field conditions. He guided many successful veterinary surgeons during his tenure, and showed during these days that thoracic surgery in ruminants could be performed without ventilators under field conditions.
Later on Dr. M. L. Kudale, Dr. M. B. Mantri and Dr. C. C. Wakankar headed the department.
